Important lobby
Kine A week told you “The sturdy ‘crooks slide out’ are peopled that have a colourful variety of important and you may arresting letters, and they, skilfully controlled by the writer and you will manager, let the film to help you tread water efficiently. It’s just towards the end up it starts to break down, but the slap-up finale rescues they regarding ‘red’. Admirably staged and you may wisely dialogued, it has no high problem for the life style off its very ugly identity.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Flick Bulletin said “The movie actions during the a simple pace, this new discussion is smooth and characterisations essentially productive. Cock Powell and Evelyn Keyes head the newest cast expertly, because detective try played with considerable aplomb because of the see your face character, Lee J. Cobb.” [ nine ]
Richard Brody regarding The fresh new Yorker indexed “Which terse and taut motion picture noir was based on the fresh new romantic and elite issues of your own title reputation, the fresh violent genius (played from the Cock Powell) trailing a chic unlawful gambling establishment. Brand new film’s creator and you will director, Robert Rossen, creates an excellent multidimensional chess video game, getting mortal limits, anywhere between Johnny, his manager (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s wife (Ellen Received), an excellent cagey police inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you will an effective scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever aunt (Nina Foch) has worked from the local casino and old good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The brand new caustically epigrammatic script, the latest cast’s suavely managed body gestures off love and menace, and you can Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you will smartly assertive images (as well as their political conscience) make this pugnacious yet in depth spectacle a hidden antique of one’s style.” [ ten ]
Diversity gave the film kudos, writing, “This will be a smart whodunit, that have awareness of scripting, casting and you may camerawork training they over the mediocre. Photo features activity and you may suspense, and you can certain brief touches away from jokes to include style. Ace performances by Manhood Powell, because a gambling family overseer, and you can Lee J. Cobb, since a police inspector, as well as up the score . While the spot comes after a familiar trend, the fresh new characterizations are fresh as well as the performances suitable in order to overbalance. Dialogue is terse and you may relevant, avoiding the sentimental, phoney contact. Uncommon camera angles come along now and then in order to escalate desire and you may temporarily stop the attention. Good teamplay from the Robert Rossen, doubling because the manager-scripter, and Milton Holmes, brand spanking new blogger and affiliate manufacturer, together with supports making this a mellow manufacturing.” [ eleven ]
Motion picture critic Bosley Crowther gave the movie a mixed opinion, criticizing it to have slow pacing, composing, “Nevertheless slowness and you can general misunderstandings of your own patch for two-thirds of one’s film cannot produce celebrated excitement, while the shallowness of your own puzzle on that has performing all the new eliminating alleviates they of every high anticipation. It is mainly a matter of seeing Mr. Powell read his paces fashionably if you find yourself a giant shed out of stars and performers bring him conventional assistance. Evelyn Keyes plays the nice little lady just who brings out the fresh best in him and Ellen Drew is the easy and you may slinky vixen just who gets him on the jams. Thomas Gomez is actually oily due to the fact villain and Lee J. Cobb do a separate ready trip due to the fact a tired cops inspector just who ultimately shuts the case. A great deal of ingesting and you will smoking is done by most of the concerned.” [ 12 ]
Philp French, creating on the Observer told you: “That it barely revealed movie noir is the chill, controlled directorial debut of left-wing writer exactly who proceeded and make instance classics as the All the King’s Dudes as well as the Hustler .” [ thirteen ]
